Kenneth "Ken" Smith joined the Evans School in 2010. His teaching and research focus on measuring the financial and non-financial performance of government and nonprofit organizations. He is interested in how these organizations use information in order to make decisions to achieve their goals. Smith is also interested in information systems and the processes and forms of media individuals use in order to share information internally as well as externally to support decision-making activities and meet their accountability requirements.

From 2001 to 2004, Smith was on the faculty at Pepperdine University, where he worked with undergraduate business and accounting majors. He supervised several student research projects and advised student organizations. In 2003, Smith received the Outstanding Paper Award from the American Accounting Association's Government and Nonprofit Section.

From 2004 to 2010 Smith was an assistant professor of accounting and information science at the Atkinson Graduate School of Management at Willamette University. He taught classes in their joint MBA/MPA program in management accounting, management controls, financial accounting, and fraud/internal controls. He also taught for the Executive Development Center for clients like Sony and the State of Oregon.

Smith was the founder/advisor for the Atkinson Accounting Association and twice received the Dean’s Award for Meritorious Service to Students. His research has been published in academic and professional journals including: Public Performance & Management Review, Accounting Horizons, Journal of Government Financial Management, International Public Management Journal, Government Finance Review, and Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly.

Smith is actively involved with performance and accountability projects with the Association for Government Accountants, Oregon Public Performance Management Association and Public Performance Measurement Reporting Network. He also served as co-chair of the Assessment Committee of the Oregon Progress Board.

He is a former small business owner and also served as the interim executive director for an international nonprofit that provided wheelchairs and other mobility devices throughout the world.

Smith holds a BA from Anderson University (IN), an MBA from Ball State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA – inactive) in the state of California.
