Announcing New Evans School Faculty Member Dafeng Xu

Dafeng Xu will join the Evans School faculty as an assistant professor, beginning in Autumn Quarter 2019. Dafeng comes to the Evans School from the University of Minnesota, where he is currently a postdoctoral scholar at the Minnesota Population Center.

Dafeng specializes in using data science and big data analytics to improve the study of public policy, economics, demography, and geography. With a background in systems engineering and computer science, Dafeng brings to the Evans School rigorous and new quantitative research methodologies, including data geocoding, machine-learning-based record linkage techniques, and new demographic measures in large-scale data.

This innovative approach to quantitative research will augment the Evans School’s capacity to challenge and to build upon traditional studies with new data and methods with the goal of analyzing, visualizing, and sharing big and complex data to improve the design, delivery, and evaluation of public programs.

Xu received his Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from Cornell University in 2016, with a Minor in Demography. He received his Master’s in Systems Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 2013 and B.S. in Computer Science from Peking University in 2011.
