Established in 2004, the Nancy Bell Evans Center on Nonprofits & Philanthropy is named in honor of Nancy Bell Evans, who has been a leader and innovator in the public and nonprofit sectors for more than 30 years. 

The Center supports and disseminates cutting edge research of Evans School faculty and creates innovative learning opportunities for current and future social sector leaders at the undergraduate, graduate, and executive level. Through applied research and life-long learning, the Center serves individual leaders and elevates the social sector as a whole.

Mary Kay Gugerty, Ph.D.

Professor & Faculty Director of the Nancy Bell Evans Center

Gugerty is the Nancy Bell Evans Professor of Nonprofit Management at the Daniel J. Evans School of Public Policy & Governance and the Faculty Director of the Nancy Bell Evans Center on Nonprofits & Philanthropy. Her research focuses on evaluation and impact measurement in the social sector; advocacy, accountability and voluntary regulation programs among nonprofits and NGOs; and agricultural and rural development in sub-Saharan Africa. Gugerty's new book, The Goldilocks Challenge: Right-Sized Evaluation and Monitoring for Social Sector Organizations is co-authored with Dean Karlan and will be available from Oxford University Press in 2017.

Erica Mills, MPA

Senior Lecturer & Director of the Nancy Bell Evans Center 

Mills directs the Evans School’s Nancy Bell Evans Center on Nonprofits & Philanthropy. Her research focuses on the effects of language on engagement and efficacy in the social sector. Her Stanford Social Innovation Review article, Great Mission. Bad statement: why the social sector should worry about words, was one of SSIR’s top 10 most read articles in 2016. Mills teaches courses in marketing social innovation, funding the social sector, and also supervises student consulting teams that are part of the Evans School’s Student Consulting Lab.

Scott W. Allard, Ph.D.

Professor, Evans School of Public Policy & Governance

Allard is the author of Out of Reach: Place, Poverty, and the New American Welfare State (2009, Yale University Press), which examines the spatial and organizational challenges confronting local safety net providers. His latest book Places in Need: The Changing Geography of Poverty in America (2017, Russell Sage Foundation Press), focuses on the changing geography of poverty in metropolitan America and how the contemporary safety net has responded to rising poverty in suburban areas. Allard is a non-residential senior fellow at the Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program and an affiliate of the Institute for Research on Poverty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Rachel Fyall, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor, Evans School of Public Policy & Governance

Fyall’s research investigates the influence of nonprofit organizations on the formation of public policy and in the delivery of public services. She examines how discretion shapes the public services provided by nonprofit contractors as well as advocacy and lobbying by nonprofit organizations. Her primary research context is publicly subsidized low-income housing, including the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program and various homelessness interventions.

Joaquín Herranz Jr., Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Evans School of Public Policy & Governance

Herranz’s research interests include multi-sectoral multi-organizational network performance and management, strategic management of public and nonprofit agencies, social enterprise, as well as the roles of art, culture, and creativity in community and regional development. His published scholarship includes peer-reviewed articles in the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Public Performance and Management Review, International Public Management Journal, Public Management Review, and the Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly. He is currently writing a book about quadruple bottom line organizational performance in which he adds cultural creativity as the fourth bottom line to the triple bottom lines of financial, social, and environmental performance.

Sharon Kioko

Sharon Kioko, Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Evans School of Public Policy & Governance

Kioko’s research focuses on the financial condition of state and local governments, the relevance and significance of financial information in the municipal securities market, and the impact fiscal rules and limitations have on the size and structure of governments' revenues, expenditures, and debt burdens.  She teaches courses in public budgeting and financial management of state and local governments, financial management in nonprofit organizations, and state and local government finance. Kioko has recently been named Managing Editor of the academic journal Public Budgeting & Finance.

David Suárez, Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Evans School of Public Policy & Governance

Suárez teaches courses on public management, organizational theory, and leadership in the nonprofit sector. His current work focuses primarily on a) the relationship between managerialism and organizational outcomes and b) the consequences of professionalization for the nonprofit sector. He is particularly interested in collaboration, advocacy, and civic engagement—issues that link nonprofits to public agencies and the policy process.

Akhtar Badshah

Instructor, Founder & Chief Catalyst, Catalytic Innovators Group

Badshah is the founder and Chief Catalyst of Catalytic Innovators Group. Before CIG he was the Senior Director of Microsoft Citizenship and Public Affairs. Dr. Badshah is also the founder of Accelerating Social Transformation, a mid-career professional institute offered jointly by UW Bothell Business School and the Evans School of Public Policy and Governance. He is the co-author of the book “Technology at the Margins – How IT Meets the Needs of the Emerging Markets”, published by Wiley and Sons and the author of "Our Urban Future", published by Zed Books.

Michelle Gislason, MA

Instructor, Principal, Michelle Gislason Leadership Coaching & Consulting

Gislason is a leadership and organizational development coach and consultant living in Seattle, Washington. She is also a network partner with CompassPoint Nonprofit Services and developed several of CompassPoint’s leadership programs, including the Coaching and Philanthropy Initiative, the Blue Shield of California Foundation Strong Field Project Leadership Development Program and Network Weaver Learning Lab (NWLL), and the Thriving as an Executive Director series. She is an Organizational Development (OD) coach for the NoVo Foundation’s Move to End Violence Initiative and co-author of the award-winning book “Coaching Skills for Nonprofits Managers and Leaders (Jossey-Bass).

Teresa Guillien, MPA

Instructor, Managing Program Director, Resource Media

Guillien is a managing program director at Resource Media, a one-of-a-kind nonprofit communications firm dedicated to social impact. Guillien works on philanthropy, public health and other social impact issues and has counseled the American Academy of Pediatrics, Skoll Foundation and Sightsavers on communications strategy. She came to Resource Media after serving in a senior communications role at PATH, a major innovator and problem solver in the field of international public health.

B. Michelle Johnson

Instructor, Director of Development, Legal Voice

Johnson is the director of development for Legal Voice, a women’s rights organization that uses the law to change the legal landscape for women. Prior to this, Johnson worked in fundraising and communications at Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and Planned Parenthood of Greater Cleveland. Her volunteer experiences include serving in the Peace Corps in Cote d’Ivoire, chairing the community advisory board for the HIV/AIDS trial unit, and currently serving as a board member for Advancement Northwest and Friends of FSH Research.

Aurora Martin, JD

Instructor, Founder, popUPjustice/ABA Innovation Fellow

Martin is the founder of popUPjustice, which is a collaborative startup working on a variety of projects at the intersection of justice, technology, communications, culture, and art. She is the former executive director of Columbia Legal Services (CLS), a nonprofit legal aid program whose mission is to advocate for people who face poverty and injustice in Washington state. Martin served in different positions at CLS more than 18 years; she started as a national Equal Justice Works fellow focused on housing and went on to serve as assistant deputy director and deputy director, overseeing staff development and overall program operations. Kristina Mayer, Ed.D.

Instructor, Principal, KLMayer Consulting Group

Mayer is a specialist in the fields of philanthropy and education. She leads the KLMayer Consulting Group, helping leaders build organizational capacity and focus on results. Before launching her consulting career, where she was the founding executive director of the Jefferson Community Foundation, she was a program officer for nearly a decade at the Stuart Foundation and Washington Mutual Foundation. Prior to that, she spent 20 years in education.

Laura Pierce, MPA

Instructor, Executive Director, Washington Nonprofits

Pierce directs Washington Nonprofits, the state association for all nonprofits in Washington. Prior, Pierce was the owner of Laura Pierce Consulting, an organization dedicated to helping nonprofits thrive through strategic planning, board development, leadership transitions and capacity building. Pierce has also worked in higher education, education reform and civil rights organizations.

Karen Rotko-Wynn, CFRE

Instructor, Senior Vice President and West Division Manager, The Alford Group

Since 2001, Rotko-Wynn has provided professional counsel and training to numerous nonprofit organizations from all sectors. She guides the philanthropic process from Strategic Planning to Development Assessments and Feasibility Studies to major Capital and Endowment Campaigns. She trains volunteers and staff on their role in building capacity and leads organizations through the cultivation and solicitation process.

Cory Sbarbaro, MPA

Instructor, Founder, Turnpoint Consulting/Acting President & CEO, Group Health Community Foundation

Sbarbaro is co-creator and Lead Instructor for the Evans School’s Nonprofit Executive Leadership Institute. For 12 years, he served as Lead Instructor for the Nonprofit Management Certificate Program,a year-long, non-credit program offered through the Professional and Continuing Education Division of the University of Washington. Through his work as a consult and interim executive, he specializes in guiding organizations and leaders through critical transitions.

Jody Waits

Instructor, Director of Development and Communications, YouthCare

Waits is the director of development and communications at YouthCare, which supports homeless youth. Her professional history includes leadership positions at Women’s Funding Alliance, Child Care Resources, Girl Scouts of Western Washington and Pride Foundation. Waits is a regular speaker and trainer for boards and development teams in the region.

Amy Zimerman, CPA, MNPL, MPhil

Instructor, Executive Director, Financial Beginnings Washington

Zimerman is Lead Instructor for the Nonprofit Management Certificate Program. She is a former investment banker whose finance career and philanthropy inspired her to transition into the nonprofit sector. Previously an auditor specializing in nonprofit organizations, she’s now the executive director of Financial Beginnings Washington, which provides accessible and unbiased personal finance education to youth and adults. Zimerman is the vice president of the board of trustees of the Cedarmere Foundation and serves on the finance committee of the Washington Women’s Foundation.

Students of the Nonprofit Executive Leadership Institute (NELI)

To prepare social sector leaders at all phases of their careers, we offer a variety of degree and non-degree learning opportunities.

  • Core Program: Degree programs include a Master of Public Administration (MPA), an Executive MPA, and a Ph.D. program.

  • Executive Education: We run one non-credit course for executives: the Nonprofit Executive Leadership Institute (NELI). In order to serve a wider variety of social sector leaders, we plan to expand our non-credit executive offerings to include more options for nonprofit executives, as well as executives in philanthropy, grantmaking, and social entrepreneurship.

  • Professional and Continuing Education: We offer two year-long certificates for emerging leaders. The Certificate in Nonprofit Management and the Certificate in Fundraising Leadership.
