Submit Now: William M. Zumeta Doctoral Research Award

This spring the Evans School is announcing the establishment of the William M. Zumeta Doctoral Research Award, an award given to one Evans School Ph.D. student annually to recognize original published research led by a Ph.D. student. Professor Zumeta retired in 2021 after 36 years on faculty and many years of service to the doctoral program.

Submissions for the 1st Annual William M. Zumeta Doctoral Research Award are due by Friday, April 29, 2022 at 5pm PST.  Prof. Scott W. Allard, as the Associate Dean for Research and Engagement, will gather a set of faculty reviewers in May 2022 and the award will be announced at graduation time in June 2022. The winner will receive a certificate of award and a $500 prize.

Eligibility Guidelines:

  • Submissions must be made by students or candidates in the Ph.D. program in Public Policy and Management, who will defend their proposals in 2022 or later.
  • Submissions may be sole-authored by a Ph.D. student or co-authored with others, as long as the Ph.D. student is the documented lead author.
  • Submissions must be published between 2020 and 2022.  See below for details on eligible submissions.
  • For the purposes of this award, eligible submissions are determined to be high-quality, publicly available, and preferably peer reviewed. Journal articles that have been accepted, but not yet published are eligible with documentation of acceptance. Working papers, reports or briefs branded by UW, the Evans School, or another organization are eligible, if they have been made permanently available on a dedicated website. Conference papers are not eligible, except for fields where conference papers are published.

Submission Materials:

  • An electronic copy of the publication submission.
  • If co-authored, a brief statement about the Ph.D. student’s role as lead author.
  • If relevant, documentation of acceptance from a journal editor.

Please send submission materials to Prof. Scott W. Allard (sallard@uw.edu) by 5pm PST on Friday, April 29, 2022.  Email Prof. Allard if you have questions about submissions or eligibility.
