The Evans School is committed to making this site usable by everyone, including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification, speech input, or other assistive technology. This commitment follows the University of Washington’s accessibility policy.
Our standard
We build to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. We consider this an ongoing obligation rather than a finished state — accessibility is checked as part of how pages are built, not audited once and set aside.
What this means in practice
- Every page can be operated by keyboard alone, and the focused element is always visibly marked.
- A “Skip to main content” link lets keyboard and screen-reader users bypass the navigation.
- Page structure uses real headings and landmarks, so assistive technology can navigate by section.
- Text color is tested against the 4.5:1 contrast minimum. Where a brand color does not meet it, we use a darkened variant rather than the color as-is.
- Links are written to make sense out of context, so a list of links read aloud is still useful.
- Animation is reduced or removed for visitors whose systems request it.
- Images carry text alternatives, and decorative images are hidden from screen readers rather than announced.
Known limitations
We want to be straightforward about where the experience may fall short:
- Embedded content. Videos, the events calendar, and externally hosted forms are provided by third parties. We choose accessible options where we can, but we do not control their code.
- Documents. Some older PDFs and files predate current standards. If you encounter one you cannot use, tell us, and we will provide the content in an accessible format.
- Migrated content. This site replaced a previous one, and some older pages are still being reviewed.

We aim to respond within 3 business days and will work with you to provide the information you need in an accessible format while we fix the underlying issue.
