Privacy

The Evans School of Public Policy & Governance operates this site as a unit of the University of Washington. Our practices follow the UW’s Online Privacy Statement and Privacy Policy. This page describes what happens on evans.uw.edu specifically.

What this site collects

Server logs. Our web servers record standard request data — IP address, browser and device type, referring page, and time of request — as part of normal operation and security monitoring.

Analytics. We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used. Alongside page views, we measure a defined set of interactions: clicks on admissions and giving links, use of the course, faculty and research filters, terms entered into site search, downloads, and video plays. We do this to find out which pages help people and which do not — searches that return no results, for instance, tell us directly what content is missing.

We use this only to improve the site. It is reported in aggregate, never used for advertising, and never sold or shared. We do not collect names, email addresses, or any other information that would let us identify you, and we do not attempt to connect site activity to any individual.

When you give us information

This site does not ask you for personal information in order to read it. Where you can submit something — an application, an event registration, a mailing list signup — you are handed off to a service operated by the University or by a named third party. What you enter there is held by that service and governed by its privacy policy, which is linked at the point you provide it.

Cookies

Analytics sets a cookie to distinguish one visit from another. Embedded content — YouTube and Vimeo videos, the UW events calendar — sets its own cookies when it loads, under those providers’ policies rather than ours.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and Google offers a browser opt-out add-on that stops Analytics collection entirely. Neither will prevent you from using this site.

Restricted areas

Some pages require a UW NetID sign-in. Authentication is handled by the University’s central login service; we receive only confirmation that you are authorized.

Records

Server logs and analytics data are retained according to University records retention schedules. As a public institution, the University is subject to the Washington Public Records Act, and records it holds may be subject to disclosure.
