Back by Popular Demand: A Workshop on the Art of Harvesting!
In August of 2022 and 2023, the Evans School hosted Leading Courageously in Higher Education. These were the first Art of Hosting & Harvesting Conversations that Matter workshops ever held at the UW and involved people from across the three campuses, as well as some external community leaders. Participants spoke highly of the program, and interest grew to expose others to these powerful practices and deepen learning for those who have been practicing since.
The Art of Hosting and the Art of Harvesting work together as two halves of a whole. Hosting focuses on engaging people in conversation; Harvesting involves the documentation and meaning-making. There is a breadth and a depth to both, and a lot of intentional work in making sure that the documentation processes are robust and thorough, consistent with the generative spirit of hosting. In 2023, we offered a workshop in Art of Harvesting and in 2024, we will do so again. The content will be different than the previous year, so you will appreciate the opportunity to practice these skills with others in our UW community even if you participated last year.
Engage participants to make meaning together. Make collective insights visible. Create artifacts to move wiser action forward.
The Evans School invites friends and colleagues to experience, explore, and practice ways that build skills to expand your capacity to plan, design, and communicate. Learn skills that can be put into practice immediately.
Some of the concepts that will be covered in Art of Harvesting include:
- The harvest approach and strategic harvesting framework (intangible, tangible, individual, collective)
- Different forms of harvest (harvest documents, art, photos, etc.)
- Collaborative sense-making online (MURAL, Google Suite, and other tools) and with visuals (flows, templates)
- Power dynamics in harvesting (sharing power and being mindful of the power we hold)
- Basics of visual harvesting and developing a visual vocabulary (visual elements)
- Application of learning (work on an engagement/project while in the training)
Play and practice will be central tenets of the workshop.
Program participants will be equipped with tools they need to grow their visual practice during and after the workshop experience. The base set of materials will include a set of visual practice cards, a basic A5 sketchbook, and a good pen. Markers will also be provided.
