Engaging Intentionally in Higher Education: A Step Beyond the Basics of The Art of Hosting & Harvesting Conversations that Matter

August 5, 2024 - August 7, 2024

An invitation to explore new ways of working, meeting, and leading in complexity

Today, more than ever, all disciplines must become better at inviting more people to co-create effective solutions and services. As the University of Washington steps out into supporting new initiatives about pressing societal challenges – revitalizing democracy, technology and society, climate change, and supporting behavioral health – we need to build out capacity to engage communities both inside the university and outside it as well. Join us in experiencing, exploring, and practicing ways to support and build individual and organizational capacity to navigate the complexity of our world.

Through this 3 full-day experience, the Evans School is again bringing to the UW a powerful set of practices that enable authentic engagement, build community, activate shared intelligence, and motivate leadership for change. The Art of Hosting & Harvesting Conversations that Matter is an approach to leadership that scales up from the individual to the systemic using personal practice, dialogue, facilitation, and the co-creation of innovation to address complex challenges.

How do we intentionally lead innovative change which requires
equitable, diverse, and inclusive practices?

How do we intentionally lead to disrupt historical systems that are
deeply rooted in institutional hierarchy?

How do we intentionally lead to create human-centered systems across
personnel, policies, practices, and praxis?

In 2022 and 2023, the Evans School called 3-day workshops that introduced the UW community to this methodology. This year – given the ambitious work that the University plans to steward – we want to go deeper into these frameworks and tools. So, we are targeting our invitation to people who have attended the introductory workshop in the past, as well as those who are leading the changes that are ahead. Join us and you will leave feeling empowered and ready to…

Build stronger teams and partnerships
Broaden the skill set within your group, work more effectively and enjoyably together, engage teams, organizations, and community stakeholders in meaningful conversations that promote resilience, belonging, innovation, and develop intergovernmental relationships to create collective impact.

Enhance skills and abilities to work with complexity, uncertainty, and change
Develop leadership confidence for facing challenges that do not have solutions, learn practices to engage skillfully with fear, conflict, and stuck patterns, use wise process planning architectures for small- and large-scale initiatives, and host strategic conversations.

Apply what you are learning directly to the change initiatives that are important to you and the university.

Key program elements in the Engaging Intentionally experience:

  • Deep dives into foundational concepts & patterns (Living Systems, Cynefin framework, Chaordic Leadership)
  • Praxis Lab to explore group process methodologies with depth and nuance (Circle, World Cafe, Open Space)
  • Design for Wiser Action to tap into the collective wisdom of the group to design intentional engagements
  • Hosted conversations and guided reflections

We invite diversity of perspectives to create a vibrant learning space, which we can build on in our work. Attend as a team to make the application of what you’ve learned much easier to integrate!
